See, see, this picture is AMAZING. Look at how tall One World Trade Center (which I still call the Freedom Tower) is!
I’ve been watching this building inch up for years, and walking to work I see it on my right-hand side with the Empire State Building on my left. With every new floor it creeps higher, and becomes a more prominent part of the city. You catch it standing in the distance from the LIRR just outside of Jamaica, peeking out between buildings from midtown, and capping the island from the entrance ramps to the Lincoln Tunnel.
I am shocked every time I see it from anywhere but lower Manhattan, even more so in photos and video. Photos like these are a reminder that this building is already changing the way the public perceives New York, the way we think about our own skyline. To think that tourists will visit here and recognize the building from pictures they’ve seen is unreal—it’s still under construction! Buildings are put up and town down and repaired every day in the city, but very few get noticed like this one. Skylines are touchy subjects for city-dwellers, and none more than New York’s, given how much and how suddenly ours changed eleven years ago.
Is it lame to say ‘welcome’ to our newest tallest building? Welcome, 1WTC. Glad to see you.
