A New Perspective of the Day: Central Park, Manhattan
Russian aerial photographer Sergey Semenov took this breathtaking view of Manhattan near Central Park, which earned him the Epson International Photographic Panorama Awards 2012 in amateur’s built-environment category.
My first reaction is that this is very beautiful. But isn’t it a little problematic that this woman’s body is literally being used as a canvas? Her identity is erased and her body is a vehicle for someone else’s art. It just makes me think when a woman’s headless body is used to sell clothes, products, messages and even art. Then again, I’m all for using your body for whatever the hell you want, and maybe she wanted to project a map onto her backside! Maybe the presence of the African continent brought exploitation to my mind after an afternoon of studying early American lit that is seriously problematic vis-à-vis Natives.
