The man, the myth, the legend (plus the progeny).

Not Getting Closer
Jack Gilbert
Walking in the dark streets of Seoul
under the almost full moon.
Lost for the last two hours.
Finishing a loaf of bread
and worried about the curfew.
I have not spoken for three days
and I am thinking, “Why not just
settle for love? Why not just
settle for love instead?”

It’s All in the Jar a c. 1900 pamphlet made by Marion Harland from the Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. in the Szathmary Collection of Historic Cooking Pamplets. See a selection online in the Iowa Digital Library.
Take a look at the University of Iowa’s post on jam making from their special collection archive. Weekend project, anyone?

Big Girls in Costumes (Response to Alex Day) (x)
“I’m gonna tell you why people are watching that video and why they’re upset about it, and why they can’t understand that, yknow—the beginning and the end of that might be very satirical and then the middle feels so real.”

When you grow up with messages like these said to your face by your friends and family, your teachers and doctors, people in school and in the mall, people you trust and respect, people you want to be like—it doesn’t go away.
And when you’ve spent your life assuming no one will ever want to employ you or date you, that it’s your duty to shield other people from the sight of your body, that fat is your defining characteristic… it’s hard to laugh off a video like Alex’s.

As a child I was obsessed with faeries and miniatures. Beautiful things like this still give me a thrill.
